Chair Karen Howe called the meeting to order at 7:04 p.m.
I. ROLL CALL
PRESENT: Terrye Blackstone; Karen Howe Glynis McKenzie; Judy Okeson; Maureen Rodgers;

ABSENT: Regina Barall (excused); Hilde Mayranen-O’Brien (excused); Betty Russell; Dan Russell ;

II. MINUTES

To approve the minutes of June 10, 2010
Clarification: Bill Nabel was mentioned in the minutes of June 10. He is a EHHS/EHSYF alum and grew up in East Hartford.
Approved with clarification.
III. CHAIR’S REPORT
Chair Howe thanked Glynis McKenzie and Florence Schroeter for overseeing the past two meetings.
Chair Howe reported that GHOE (Greater Hartford Opera Express) will be playing at Carnegie Hall. GHOE has done programs for the Fine Arts Commission in the past.
Chair Howe distributed flyers for the EHSYF performance of “Kiss Me Kate.” She has tickets for sale. Cost is $10.
IV. CORRESPONDENCE
Information was received from the following:
- Thank you note from teachers at Norris School for the mini-grant award and the opportunity for students to go to the Bushnell.
- Information from New Britain Museum of American Art.
V. COMMITTEE REPORTS
Drama/Lecture Poetry No report at this time.
Music
Florence Schroeter reported that Paul Bisaccia will be performing during Holiday Fest on Saturday, December 4, 2010 at First Church from 2-4 p.m. His cost is $800 and will do a holiday theme program. This program will be sponsored by the Fine Arts Commission.
Paul Bisaccia will also perform the “Great American Piano Revisited” in May 2011 at First Church. Cost will be $800.
Photography
John Ryan reported there were 24 participants with 40 pieces that were exhibited. The show ran for 2 weeks. John stated he had sent 2 ads to the Gazette but they were never printed. John suggested that rails be purchased for EHCCC to exhibit works throughout the year. He will investigate the cost and report in September.
Film Series No report at this time.
Art
Terrye Blackstone distributed the photos of the 2010 Purchase Award. Hartford Framing re-matted and re-framed the Purchase Award. She questioned what do to with the old frame. It was recommended that she contact Emil Kopcha, Principal of Sunset Ridge, or Laura White, Department Head of Fine Arts.
Judy Okeson questioned as to where the new Purchase Award was hanging. It is in the office of the Library Department Head. It was recommended that with the Commission owning approximately 50 pieces of work that Purchase Awards should be hung at Town Hall as well as other town buildings. Terrye Blackstone will contact Mayor Currey to discuss the areas in Town Hall that Purchase Awards can be exhibited.
Chair Howe recommended an article be placed in the East Hartford Gazette explaining the Purchase Award and the history with the Fine Arts Commission.
Children’s Programs
The clerk reported that she had heard from Hilde O’Brien and Donald Boudreaux will be doing a program at the library. Mr. Boudreaux requested that the check be sent to him directly because when he did the program last summer he was not paid in a timely manner. The check was issued to him.
Dance No report at this time.
EHSYF
Glynis McKenzie reported that rehearsals are taking place and photos were in this week’s Gazette. This year they have built a circular stage for the production. There are signs around town advertising the event. Tickets are $10; $8 for senior citizens.
Karen Howe stated that EHSYF is looking for ushers that will hand out programs and collect tickets. Please call her if interested.
PHOTOGRAPHS/PAINTINGS PROJECTS FOR GOODWIN COLLEGE
Terrye Blackstone reported that she met with Mark Scheinberg, President of Goodwin College. He recommended that a painting of the Goodwin One-room Schoolhouse would be more appropriate at the college rather than barns. Discussion was held and Commissioners agreed that the school-house would be appropriate. Terry Blackstone will contact various artists that may be interested and Fine Arts will commission an artist to do the painting using funds from “A Day in the Life.”
VI. OLD BUSINESS
-Spreadsheet for 2011-12 budget for sub-committees
Chair Howe requested that the members review the budget for sub-committees and discussion, as well as allotment, will be discussed at the September meeting. Prescille Yamamoto has agreed to handle the budget and the clerk will send her copies of all bills so she may update on a monthly basis.
VII. NEW BUSINESS
- Collection of money for donation to EMS in memory of Cynthia Rozela
This will be placed on the September 2010 agenda for all Commissioners to be notified for a donation. The clerk will collect the money and send it with a letter to the EMS Contribution account in her memory.
VIII. APPROVAL OF BILLS

XI. MEMBER’S CONCERNS
Glynis McKenzie shared her concern that no programs are scheduled for fall 2010.
Maureen Rodgers reported that she had been in contact with Jane Schneeloch, former English teacher, to do a program on the writings she did on Georgia O’Keefe paintings. Maureen also reported that Bill Nabel, EHHS/EHSYF Alum, had written 2 plays for the Hartford Stage and she will contact him to see if he may be available to do a reading for a Commission event.
Terrye Blackstone will contact Jeff Feldman to do a lecture in the fall. She will report on this in September.
Florence Schroeter reported that Steve Kornhauser’s wife had gotten a position in NYC in the art field.
